Getting to Asia from Australia
There are many options for cheap flights from Australia to Asia but I usually end going with AirAsia X to Kuala Lumpur (KL) Malaysia then on to Thailand, Vietnam or India mainly because the flights are so cheap, as at Feb 2015 AirAsia flies from Adelaide, Darwin, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth & Sydney. Air Asia often have specials on where you can fly to Malaysia for $250 - $300 but you pay for all the extras like food, luggage, pick your seat etc… but having said that you can get a one way ticket for less than $400.
Sometimes the specials extend to the Premium Flatbed; in March 2015 I booked flights from Bangkok to the Gold Coast in the Premium Flatbed for $515, this did involve clearing Customs in KL…. but to fly in the Premium Flatbed for this price I did not mind doing this.

I have also been on Air Asia flights where they offer the Flatbeds to other passengers for an extra $150 dollars although this does not happen much now that Air Asia & Optiontown have joined forces.

Optiontown offers upgrades on AirAsia X flights (and other airlines) for the following options:
- Upgrade Travel Option (UTo) where you pay a fee (usually around AUD300) for the possibility to upgrade to a Premium Seat if it is available on your flight if you don’t get upgraded the premium is refunded less $4 or $5 booking fee
- Empty Seat Option (ESo) where you get 3 seats together which allows you to lie down and sleep across 3 seats
- Preferred Seat Option(PSo) which gives you extra leg room or an empty seat between you and the person next to you
- Flight Pass Option (FPo) lets you pre-book and pay for a number of flights for the period that suits you anything from 6 flights to 16 flights over a time frame of 3 months to 12 months. An example of this is 8 flights from the Gold Coast to KL over a 12 month period for 2-3 people is $223 per flight economy or $523 premium and the more flexible with advance bookings and the cheaper the flights are.
